Bhendi grows in a wide range of climate tropical,sub tropical & warm temperate regions. Bhendi is a warm season crop. It is grown in summer months and also during the rainy season. It is highly sensitive to frost. Seeds germinate poorly at ground temperature of 20 °C or less. The optimum soil temperature for growth is 24 to 32 °C. Planting for kharif season : June - August and for summer : January -February.

2 Preparation -21 (+/- 0) 2.0 Soil factors:
It adaptable to a wide range of soils. It performs better in sandy loam to clayey loam as compared to other soils. Soils with good drainage capacity enhances production. The optimum pH range is between 6 and 6.8.

3 Preparation -21 (+/- 2) 3.0 Basal preparation:
Prepare the organic basal mixture consists of of decomposed farm yard manure+neem cake+azospirillum+phosphobacteria+Trichoderma+pseudomonas as per the given ratio.This is often called as enriched basal mixture. After mixing the basal heap the mixture,sprinkle water over the heap and covered with gunny bags and place it under the shade for a week (or) If it is difficult to enrich farm yard manure,apply farm yard manure separately to the field & mix the remaining azospirillum+phosphobacteria+trichoderma+pseudomonas+neem cake + farm yard manure 200kg separately. After mixing the basal heap the mixture,sprinkle water over the heap and covered with gunny bags and place it under the shade for a week. Moisture is more important for enrichment,check the moisture and sprinkle the water if needed.

4 Preparation -21 (+/- 5) 4.0 First ploughing:
Plough the soil with disc plough which cuts and incorporate the weeds into the soil and the soil is opened up for better aeration.

8 Preparation -2 (+/- 1) 1.0 Bed formation and drip setup:
Form the bed size of 4 ft width,1/2 ft - 1 ft height and convenient length by using broad bed former. The distance between the two beds is 1/2 ft. Arrange the laterals, it should be in the centre of the bed and the dripper or emitter spacing is 45cm.

9 Preparation -2 (+/- 1) 2.0 Border crop planting:
Raise the border crops around the field. It prevents/inhibits the entry of insects pests and vectors(carry disease causing pathogens). Maize is more suitable. Sow 3 - 4 rows of treated maize at a spacing of 20 cm between the plants. The sowing depth should be 4-5 cm.

Irrigate the beds till the bed is completely wet. Irrigation before 8-12 hours of seed sowing. During this time check any blockages in the drip system.

Prepare panchakavya based on the given guidelines and it can be used after 30 days. You can use the panchagavya upto 6 months from preparation date.

12 Preparation 1 (+/- 0) 1.0 Seed selection:
Select seeds free from Insects pests and diseases. Examine the seeds for presense of pests. Presense of beetles indicate seeds are of poor quality. Do not use such seeds. Also look for presence of white or green mould groth on the seeds. This indicates seeds are stored in a moist condition, which will affect their germination even if infected seeds are removed.

13 Preparation 1 (+/- 0) 2.0 Seed treatment:
Normally the seeds are treated when you purchase from reputed agro centre/seed companies. If seeds are not treated treat the seeds by the following way. Selected seeds have to mix with Tricoderma viride, Pseudomonas fluorescens and again with Azospirillum. Trichoderma,Pseudomonas and Azospirillum are available in both solid & liquid form. Powder form will not stick to seeds. Use starch/10% maida as adhesive and dried in shade for 20 minutes. If you go for liquid formulations no need to use ahesive. Soak the seeds in liquid formulations in a container and wait till the seeds become uniformly wet.

14 Sowing 1 (+/- 0) 3.0 Planting:
Bhendi is a direct sown crop ( no need to maintain nursery ) So you can sow 1 seed/hill(spot) in the field at a depth of 1 - 2 cm. Sow the seeds in three rows at a spacing of 60cm x 45cm x 30cm.

15 Crop growing 1 (+/- 1) 4.0 Irrigation:
Irrigate the field depends on the soil type and the moisture holding capacity in the soil. Example : Watering in sandy loam is more then the clay soil because clay soil retain more moisture than the sandy loam soil.

Place the yellow sticky traps randomly in the field at the height of 2-3 fts from the ground level. Instant yellow traps are available in the market. You can also made traps easily in your farm. The main use of these traps is to monitor the presence of sucking pests like aphids,whitefly,brown hoppers. It facilitates early control and reduce further spreading.

22 Crop growing 13 (+/- 1) 1.0 Bio Fertilizer Solution Preparation:
Mix jaggery and flour ( Black gram/Green gram/red gram/horse gram ) as per the given recommendations. After mixing pour 10 litres of water and allowed for boiling. Then change it to 200 litres plastic container and fill the half of the container with water. Add Azospirillum+Phosphobacteria+Trichoderma+Pseudomonas as per the given ratio and mix well. After that fill the container with water @ full capacity. All of them are mixed and kept under shade, covered by a gunny bag to facilitate aeration. The mixture is stirred by using a stick for 1 minute once a day for three days. Clean the stick after use ( otherwise mosquitoes lay eggs on sticks which affects the quality when again used for stirring ). Allow it for three days and check for any insects infections daily.
